For over one hundred years, teams of mules were used as
transportation into the great valleys of Kohala. The Kohala Mule Trail Adventure continues this tradition.
After a brief orientation we mount the mules for a short ride to a lookout of epic proportions-beyond are
towering seacliffs that extend for miles, often with cascading waterfalls; below is the black sand beach we
will soon be riding along; behind us is a view up the lush, magnificent Pololu Valley. From the lookout we
begin the breathtaking descent to the valley floor. Once on the valley floor, we follow a path that first
skirts along the valley wall through the dense, beautiful blossoming hao forest, a native Hawaiian hibiscus
tree. Finally, we come out at the beach in the towering ironwoods that grow on huge windblown black sand
dunes. At the beach we dismount for beachcombing, pictures and rest. Once we remount and cross the stream at
the beach we begin the ride back up the valley wall. Here you will definitely appreciate your four-legged
friend as he easily carries you up the steep, zigzag trail and back to the Mule Station.
